This Privacy Policy explains how FoodiePals ("FoodiePals", "we", "us", "our") collects, uses, shares, and protects your personal data when you use the FoodiePals mobile application and related services (the "Service").
We process your personal data in accordance with the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), the German Federal Data Protection Act (Bundesdatenschutzgesetz, BDSG), and other applicable laws.

This section explains what personal data we process, for what purposes, and on what legal basis under Article 6 GDPR.
What: Name (if provided), email address, profile photo (if uploaded), authentication method (Apple, Google, or email), and a unique user ID.
Why: To create and manage your account, authenticate you, and provide the Service.
Legal basis: Art. 6(1)(b) GDPR (performance of a contract).
Retention: For as long as your account exists. Deleted within 30 days after account deletion unless retention is required by law.
What: Identity token, unique identifier, and email address (or Apple relay email).
Why: To securely authenticate you and create your account.
Legal basis: Art. 6(1)(b) GDPR.
Retention: As long as your account exists.
What: Display name, profile photo, recommendations, responses, saved restaurants, and other content you create.
Why: To provide the core functionality of the Service and enable social interactions.
Legal basis: Art. 6(1)(b) GDPR.
Important: Content shared with other users may remain visible to them (e.g. in conversations) even after you delete your account, but will no longer be associated with your active profile.
Retention: Until you delete the content or your account, subject to legal retention obligations.
What: If you grant permission, we access phone numbers from your device contacts.
Important safeguards:
Why: To match you with people you know who also use FoodiePals.
Legal basis: Art. 6(1)(a) GDPR (consent via device permission).
Retention: Until you revoke permission, disable matching, or delete your account.
Note: You confirm that you are permitted to share this data under applicable law. We do not use this data to contact your contacts.
What: Approximate or precise location, depending on your permission.
Why: To show nearby restaurants and provide context for recommendations.
Legal basis: Art. 6(1)(a) GDPR (consent).
Important: Location is processed only when needed and is not continuously tracked.
Retention: Not stored beyond request processing unless explicitly saved.
What: Photos you upload (e.g. profile picture).
Why: Profile personalisation.
Legal basis: Art. 6(1)(b) GDPR combined with device permission.
Retention: Until removed or account deletion.
What: Push notification token (APNs / FCM).
Why: To send notifications (e.g. replies).
Legal basis: Art. 6(1)(a) GDPR (consent).
Retention: Until disabled or account deletion.
What: Crash logs, device type, OS version, app version, installation ID, and stack traces.
Safeguard: We take measures to avoid sending personal content (such as messages or recommendations) in crash reports.
Why: To detect and fix technical issues.
Legal basis: Art. 6(1)(b) GDPR (legitimate interest in maintaining a stable service).
Retention: Up to 90 days.
What: Usage events (e.g. screen views, actions), device information, and a pseudonymous user identifier.

Control: You can disable analytics at any time in the app settings.

We do not sell your personal data.

The Service is not intended for users under 16. We do not knowingly collect data from children under 16.

You can delete your account at any time within the app or by contacting us.
Deletion is irreversible. Personal data is deleted within 30 days, except where retention is required for legal, security, or fraud prevention purposes.
The app does not use cookies in the traditional sense. However, we may use similar technologies (e.g. local storage, device identifiers).
Where required under §25 TTDSG or similar laws, we obtain your consent before accessing or storing such information.
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time.
If changes are not material, we will inform you appropriately (e.g. by updating the date or providing notice in the app).
If changes are material and affect your rights or the way we process personal data, we will notify you at least 14 days in advance.
Where required by law, we will obtain your explicit consent before such changes take effect.
If you do not agree to the updated Privacy Policy, you must stop using the Service and may delete your account at any time.
